Description Heimia salicifolia, known as Sinicuichi or Sun Opener, is an important visionary plant for the traditional inhabitants of the highlands of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, Mexico. Indigenous to Mexico, and cultivated in most of South America. The plant contains several alkaloids, including lyfoline, nesodine, and vertine (cryogenine). These compounds are thought to be responsible for its psychoactive and medicinal effects. Sinicuichi tea has a Shamanic tradition dating to the Aztecs and used as a auditory hallucinogen. The leaves were crushed, mixed with water and allowed to ferment for a few days, making a nice-tasting tea called Sinicuichi. The effect of the Sinicuichi tea was euphoria and a brightening/yellowing of vision, hence the name Sun Opener. The fermented beverage, that when traditionally prepared, may cause mild intoxication, auditory hallucinations, yellowing and darkening of field of vision and improved memory function.
