I know people are making these themselves, but after a lot of looking around, we went with this one because she’s already figured out all the kinks….and her customer service was great when I had questions! Four months into using this (in winter!) we are so impressed! We got the 4 port feeder (because I’ve learned to go big with flocks). We use crumbles and I don’t think that self gravitates like maybe pellets do, so I only put in enough to barely cover the top of the ports from the inside…..but I only refill it every 3-5 days. Each morning I shake the feeder to get it all down and reach inside with my hand to get it under the feeding ports. If you’re reading that and thinking “that’s too high maintenace!” just wait. I NEVER EVER EVER EVER have wasted food anymore! We went from buying a bag every couple of weeks to barely one a month….for 7 hens and we’ll have 12 by summer. THAT was high maintenance. I’ll take a little shimmying around of feed each morning any day over all the clean up of wasted feed. Between the wasted food on the ground and the backyard birds (invasive starlings and house sparrows anyone?) we needed a change. This feeder is the change. If you have a completely covered run this feeder will be perfect. If your feeder is accessible to other creatures, no worries. You’ll waste soooo little! Admittedly, the starlings did figure this out once a severe cold snap hit and they were desperate, but the house sparrows have never figured it out. And mice can’t reach it. When the starlings are in high numbers I just close all but one port. The hens reach into it often enough that the starlings mostly leave it be. (I keep the port covers inside the feeder for easy access when I need them….or I’d lose them!) Our feeder is in the run with only bird netting over it. Wind, rain, snow, etc has yet to cause a problem. The feed stayed dry through all weather all winter. And with 55 mph wind gusts all day today, it never moved off the stack of pavers it sets on. (Definitely set your feeder at a height where they can get their heads in and dip down a bit without having to tip toe or choke themselves.) Definitely a 5-star product. And get 4 ports. You’ll probably get more chickens. LOL
