Auto-Fill Cups: Pros & Cons Why chickens and owners like them: Cups stay filled with water, so chickens do not need to learn how to use a nipple waterer. Many chickens naturally enjoy drinking from an open cup. Things to keep in mind: Cups can collect dirt or debris. Simply twist each cup upside down a few times to flush it and refill it with clean water. Auto-fill cups may freeze during cold weather, even when a heater is used. When this happens, chickens can still drink from the nipples, which can continue working with a compatible heater. The cups will work normally again once temperatures warm up. *Note: Chickens may still waste feed they can sort through and selectively pick apart, such as whole-grain feed.
